Volcanos and CO2 Emissions – Truth or Hoax? – Take Two

In December of 2012, right after the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull erupted, I published a post here commenting about people posting nonsense about volcanos and anthropogenic global warming. At the time I said:

The amount of misinformation spewed on the American public, driven by purposeful and targeted campaigns to dumb us down, is alarming.

This seems to be a pattern on Facebook, as I came across this picture in my feed on January 2. I have redacted the name of the poster and recipient, since those are not relevant to my argument.

Mt. Etna on Facebook

This poster obviously argued that “one minor eruption on Dec 3, 2015, pumped 10,000 times as much CO2 into the air as all of mankind has ever produced. He then insulted 97% of all climate scientists in the world by telling them to “get over it” and calling them “panic merchants.”

When I didn’t know what volcano he was talking about, I asked for more details. When the poster never responded, I did a 15 second Google search and realized he must have talked about the Mt. Etna eruption on December 3rd. There is plenty of documentation about that eruption, and another 30 seconds later I had the facts I needed.

Gas studies at volcanoes worldwide have helped volcanologists tally up a global volcanic CO2 budget in the same way that nations around the globe have cooperated to determine how much CO2 is released by human activity through the burning of fossil fuels. Our studies show that globally, volcanoes on land and under the sea release a total of about 200 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

— The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory explained how much CO2 is generated by volcanoes in a 2007 article

200 million tons of CO2 seems like an extraordinary large amount. However, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) found that the estimated amount of CO2 generated annually by human activity is 135 times higher.

In addition, volcanos also spew out sulfur dioxide, which can lead to volcanic air pollution. Sulfur dioxide gas reacts chemically with sunlight, oxygen, dust particles, and water to form volcanic smog known as vog. This actually offsets some of the CO2 greenhouse effect by doing the opposite: Inducing cooling by injection of pollution into the atmosphere. So volcanos are often actually balanced out.

It is easy to post a picture like the above in a Facebook feed and let it trickle down to the uneducated and uncritical masses in order to advance an agenda. If that agenda is well-funded by powerful lobbies like the petroleum industry, it can make a significant difference in public opinion. It looks legit, doesn’t it?

Usually 30 seconds of googling provides the facts, though.

Volcanos and CO2 Emissions – Truth or Hoax?

Fact Check:

When the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull erupted in March 2010, I received this mass email:

VOLCANOES – MAKING LIBERALS LOOK STUPID…NATURALLY! *FOOD FOR THOUGHT ….. this was sent to me by a friend, thought I would pass it along.  *

*Are you sitting down? *Okay, here’s the bombshell. The current volcanic eruption going on in Iceland, since it first started spewing volcanic ash a week ago, has, to this point, NEGATED EVERY SINGLE EFFORT you have made in the past five years to control CO2 emissions on our planet.  Not only that, this single act of God has added emissions to the earth estimated to be 42 times more than can be corrected by the extreme human regulations proposed for annual reductions.

I know, I know…. (have a group hug)…it’s very disheartening to realize that all of the carbon emission savings you have accomplished while suffering the inconvenience and expense of driving Prius hybrids, buying fabric grocery bags, sitting up til midnight to finish your kid’s “The Green Revolution” science project, throwing out all of your non-green cleaning supplies, using only two squares of toilet paper, putting a brick in your toilet tank reservoir, selling your SUV and speedboat, going on vacation to a city park instead of Yosemite, nearly getting hit every day on your bicycle, replacing all of your $1 light bulbs with $10 light bulbs …well, all of those things you have done have all gone down the tubes in just the past week. The volcanic ash emitted into the Earth’s atmosphere in the past week has totally erased every single effort you have made to reduce the evil beast, carbon.  And, those hundreds of thousands of American jobs you helped move to Asia with expensive emissions demands on businesses… you know, the ones that are creating even more emissions than when they were creating American jobs, well that must seem really worthwhile now. I’m so sorry. And I do wish that there was some kind of a silver lining to this volcanic ash cloud but the fact of the matter is that the brush fire season across the western U.S.A. will start in about two months and those fires will negate your efforts to reduce carbon emissions in our world for the next two years.

So, grab a Coke, give the world a hug, and have a nice day!

AND JUST THINK HOW RICH AL GORE HAS GOTTEN OFF THIS HOAX !

So what is really going on?

According to FactCheck:

It’s true that erupting volcanoes do emit some carbon dioxide, one of the “greenhouse gases” that contributes to global climate change. But according to USGS, human activities release at least a hundred times more CO2 every year than all the world’s volcanoes combined. Published estimates of the gas emissions from all volcanoes in the world range from 123 million to 378 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. Humans haven’t produced that little since the 19th century.

The problem is that when a denier tells you the content of the email above at a cocktail party, and you don’t just happen to be a climatologist who specializes in the study of the atmosphere, you probably don’t have the facts at your fingertips and can’t successfully argue against this outrageous, completely made-up, claim.

Fact check goes on documenting that the standstill of European air travel during that time, due to ash in the atmosphere, provided a significant offset of the CO2 emissions by the volcano:

Carbon dioxide isn’t a major output of volcanic eruptions. In the case of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which began erupting in March 2010 and entered an explosive phase in April 2010, one study found that less than 15 percent of the gas given off in the pre-explosive phase was CO2 – the majority was water vapor. For some other volcanoes, the proportion of CO2 is even lower.

Still, that accounted for 150,000 to 300,000 tons of CO2 per day at the height of the Eyjafjallajokull eruption, according to wire reports. But the European Union’s air travel, which was shut down for days during the eruption, accounts for 3 percent of the EU’s total CO2 emissions, which according to the European Environment Agency was about 4,089 billion tons in 2008. That means air travel in Europe gives off about 340,000 tons of CO2 per day. The shutdown of air travel in much of Europe during the first week of the explosive eruption would have offset, if not greatly outpaced, the CO2 Eyjafjallajokull produced during that time.

The amount of misinformation spewed on the American public, driven by purposeful and targeted campaigns to dumb us down, is alarming.

Insinuating, after sprewing this volcano of garbage, that Al Gore somehow made up this “hoax” to get rich, is unforgivable. I would like to get a chance to compare the life-work of the writer of that email, who in cowardice wrote anonymously, to that of Al Gore. Then let’s have this argument again.

Now for the most important question: Who can pronounce Eyjafjallajokull?

Legitimacy of Viral Email

The email I just posted below had me thinking about viral email in general. Somebody makes some claim. In the case of the referenced email, it dates back more than ten years. It claims statistics about members of Congress. I am not sure how many members of Congress of ten years ago are still in office today, but I am sure there must be at least a 50% turnover.

But the person that sent it to me (and dozens of other people on his email list) doesn’t tell me that. He probably does not know, and he didn’t even attempt to check his facts. He simply signed his name to a bunch of nonsense, lies, exaggerations and and false claims. There is no author that claims responsibility for his statements. There are no sources to back them up. There is no date on the email other than when I received it.

My rule of thumb is that I don’t send an email with content that I would not want to see on the cover of the New York Times tomorrow. If it passes the New York Times test, it’s okay to send on. That rule has saved me many a times in business, it has kept me honest, and it has had me check veracity, integrity and accuracy. If I don’t know something, I should not write about it.

I have written 747 posts in this blog over almost four years. Every one of the posts has my name under it. I made the statement, you can read my statement, you can check the facts, if applicable, and you can challenge me. If I make a mistake, I correct it. If my post is inappropriate, I will pull it. If you simply disagree, I will post your comment.

In a free society, we must be able to speak, and others must be able to disagree. That’s the discourse we need to function. Viral emails without names of authors, dates and sources are pure trash, nothing else.

I have issues when people make claims like this.

So a quick fact-check, and 30 seconds later is the response.

If I were the person that sent this, I’d be embarrassed.

(This is community organizing at it’s [sic] finest.)

There has NEVER been anyone in the White House at any time who has created such an army of staffers whose sole duties are the facilitation of the First Lady’s social life. One wonders why she needs so much help, at taxpayer expense, when even Hillary, only had three; Jackie Kennedy one; Laura Bush one; and prior to Mamie Eisenhower social help came from the President’s own pocket.

Of course, this claim had me suspicious. Laura Bush one?

About 30 seconds of research and I found the list of the White House staff of June 30, 2008, under George W. Bush, and of course Laura Bush. You can check this Washington Post article yourself. I counted 16 entries in this list that have the words “first lady” in the title. In the list above, there are, besides the chief of staff, also six names that do not have the string “first lady” in the title. So, between staffers for Michele Obama and Laura Bush, it’s the same number.

It seems appalling to me that somebody could claim it was 22 staffers for Obama and one for Bush!

Here is George W. Bush’s list of staffers. The total salaries are $33,193,021.

Email Hoax: Ollie North Grilled by Al Gore

I received the following text in an Internet broadcast email that I was supposed to send on to my friends. I get a many of those, but this one just didn’t smell right. Here is the content of that email:

It was 1987! At a lecture the other day they were playing an old news video of Lt. Col. Oliver North testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the Reagan Administration.

There was Ollie in front of God and country getting the third degree, but what he said was stunning!

He was being drilled by a senator, ‘Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for home security system?’

Ollie replied, ‘Yes, I did, Sir.’

The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, ‘Isn’t that just a little
excessive?’

‘No, sir,’ continued Ollie.

‘No? And why not?’ the senator asked.

‘Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, sir.’

‘Threatened?  By whom?’ the senator questioned.

‘By a terrorist, sir’ Ollie answered.

‘Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?’

‘His name is Osama bin Laden, sir’ Ollie replied.

At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn’t pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn’t.  A couple of people laughed at the attempt.  Then the senator continued.  Why are you so afraid of this man?’ the senator asked.

‘Because, sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of’, Ollie answered.

‘And what do you recommend we do about him?’ asked the senator.

‘Well, sir, if it was up to me, I would recommend that an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth.’

The senator disagreed with this approach, and that was all that was shown of the clip.

The senator who conducted the questioning was Al Gore.

I decided to do some checking. I reviewed scores of videos of Ollie North in front the Congress in 1987. Al Gore was not even on the panel. From my knowledge of the history of Afghanistan, I knew that Osama bin Laden was still fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan in 1987. He was not a terrorist yet. Then I found this transcript of what really happened on page 129 of the Iran Contra Investigation Transcript:

Al Gore was not even on the panel. John Nields was the committee’s chief counsel. The questioning was about a security system. Ollie North denies that he ever stated that we was afraid of anybody.

A lot of people send emails around to their friends, where statements are made about alleged facts that turn out to be pure fabrication. I don’t know why somebody would make up such nonsense, particularly if it can be proven to be nonsense at best, or lies more appropriately. This one was easy to check out, since the fabrications were just too outlandish. Others are harder.

I try not to believe everything my friends forward to me in emails. Most of it is trash.
