Afternoon Breeze – by Gary Ackerman

At the northernmost point on the Big Island of Hawaii, there is a little town called  Kapa’au, reminiscent of Julian, California. Driving through, I glanced to the right and saw a gallery with large, bright paintings. We stopped and walked in and were lucky, because the artist himself was there. He was most gracious, and we talked for quite a while about his technique and the work he was planning on doing, while looking at all his work. Whenever I see a successful artist, I always get inspired. What a life.

New Painting: A Bug Retired

Last month I drove from Albany, NY to Cooperstown, NY, on back roads. I enjoyed the fall foliage, the sunny autumn day, and the roadside views. As  I drove on Highway 145 west through Cobleskill, my eye caught some color off to the right. I drove on up the hill, did a U-turn when the road was clear and pulled down into the parking lot of Klaus’ Autowerks, a German auto repair shop. Here I saw, off to the side, the inspiration to a new painting: A Bug Retired.

Note that the colors are those of the German flag, black, red and gold.

Clouds over Mojave

This summer I hiked up Mt. Baldy. From the “devil’s backbone”, at an elevation of about 9,000 feet, I had this view toward the north, overlooking the Mojave Desert stretching out into the distance. Thick clouds covered the bottom of the mountain, but the sky above me was bright and blue. A painting was born.

Painting: Supermoon Over Swiss Alps

Supermoon in Swiss Alps

Friends were visiting Switzerland this summer and were there during the supermoon period. From the balcony of their lodging they were able to watch the moonrise, catching some great zoomed shots. One of them (permission by V.T.) inspired this painting.

Painting: Wild Daisies

A month ago I went on a bike ride in the neighborhood wetlands, spotted a little stand of red in the corner of my eye, turned around, climbed down the embankment and took a snapshot. I am not really sure if they are “wild daisies” but that’s good enough for me. Please correct me if you can identify the flower and I will retitle it.

This is the resulting painting.

Painting: Old Man

After a Pakistani web site lifted my painting Afghan Women, I browsed around on that site and found a motif for a new painting. Since the photograph is all in Arabic, I cannot read the credits or the site, so I cannot give credit as is due. The site was www.pashtob.com but it seems defunct as of this writing.

Here is the resulting painting.

Inspired to Paint

This street scene by Greg Gandy inspired me to paint a series of Portraits of San Francisco. Now all I need is some photographs for motifs to get me started with material.

New Painting: No Lifeguard

No Lifeguard, Oil on Canvas, 36 x 36 inches, March 2012

I was in Clearwater Beach, Florida last November at a conference. In the evening I walked the beach. The setting sunlight illuminated the lifeguard stations. I knew there’d be a painting there somewhere.
