I tried to read the book when it first came out but it did not command my attention. The movie is rated very well by the general public and the reviewers. When we looked for schedules, we found that there were very few showings that were not in 3D. So we succumbed, paid the extra money and watched it in 3D.
First I must say that there was no reason in the world why this movie was in 3D. There were a few 3D effects, but I really can do without those by now. I know you can have things leap out of the screen. For the most part, I kept being bothered by the glasses and wished I didn’t need to use them. Do not spend the money on 3D if you can avoid it. I predict your experience will be better overall. But movies and 3D is another subject entirely that I will be taking up soon.
The story started out in India, telling Pi Patel’s life. His father buys a zoo, then decides to close it down for economic reasons, and sell the animals in Canada. On the journey, the ship is wrecked in a storm. Pi survives in a lifeboat that he shares with an adult Bengal tiger.
The story starts out slow and builds as it progresses. It managed to keep my attention better than the book did. I was definitely distracted by the 3D. By all means, this is not a bad movie, not a forgettable one, due to the exotic subject matter, but I don’t think it will win too many awards.
Rating: ** 1/2
