Maternity Box – Made in Finland

Every mother in Finland, regardless of income or status, is eligible to get the Maternity Box after 154 days of pregnancy. An expectant mother fills out a form and submits a certificate of pregnancy from her healthcare provider.

Here is a picture album an expectant mother posted about the box she got today.

Of course, this would never work in the United States. It would be regarded as socialist. Why would one taxpayer want to have money spent on another taxpayer. Let those that want to have children pay for them themselves.

Most Americans would regard Finland as a socialist country. I tried to figure out what tax rate they had. This Wikipedia article has all the bewildering details and yet, I can’t answer my own question after reading it. I am sure taxation is high.

I have said many times in this blog:

You can tell what is important to a society by what it spends its money on.

Finland is sending expectant mothers boxes of goodies.

In America, 90% of all school children in Chicago come from families with less than $30,000 a year of income. Many of our bridges, highways, and schools are crumbling. Yet, we find billions to fund foreign wars and F-35 fighter planes.

There is a plethora of services and goods available to low income mothers. On the other hand there are nearly none for anyone outside of the ‘eligibility status’. I wonder though, if given a box like the one above, people would truly appreciate it – or would they complain that it’s not the right color, size or if it doesn’t meet all of the other requirements that we ‘want’ as consumers here in the US.
