This shows abstract thinking, planning, problem solving and creativity all at once – in an animal. It represents a powerful argument and example against human exceptionalism.
I believe humans are not the only animal that uses tools, that thinks, that has a sense of identity and self. I don’t believe that humans are different in kind from all the other animals.
Abstract thinking, planning, problem solving and creativity aren’t the only “intelligent” things animals can do. They are also capable of crime. A gorilla was given a supply of cardboard coins wrapped in foil. He learned that he could buy an apple by giving a coin to the worker. One day he gave the worker only half a coin. She checked his stash, and he had torn all his coins in half. Clipping the coin of the realm! They used to hang kings for that.
