The Most Expensive Embassy in the World

The most expensive embassy in the world is the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. It cost $750 million to build, was completed only three and a half years ago, and is now getting an upgrade of $115 million.

According to this article in Business Insider,

For example the U.S. spent about $100 million on the Police College facility — which includes a living quarters, dining facility, office building, new gymnasium and a helicopter landing site — that will be turned over to the Iraqis at year’s end because State didn’t get land rights use for more than one year.

I have a problem when our government spends these sums of money, and right here in California we’re laying off preschool teachers for lack of funding. What in the world do we need a “billion dollar embassy” for in a country that is mired in civil war (never mind how it got this way, Dick)? If it gets really bad, the Baghdad embassy isn’t going to fare any better than the Benghazi embassy did. If it gets bad enough, we’ll abandon it, and it will be another boondoggle of gigantic proportions.

Where is fiscal oversight when we need it?
