The 18-year-old Princess Elizabeth convinced her father, the king, to go into military service. She helped Britain’s efforts in World War II when she joined the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service as an honorary Second Subaltern. She was trained as a military truck driver and mechanic. Five months later she was promoted to Junior Commander.

She is the last surviving head of state to have served during World War II.
